OCTOBER | PAGE 44 | 2014 HEROES FOR CHILDREN'S BRUNCH & HANDBAGS POSH PURSES T his past spring, Heroes for Children celebrated its eighth annual Heroes and Handbags bruncheon/ auction, a fashionable gathering of gilded ladies bidding on designer handbags to benefit the charity that provides assistance to the families of children battling cancer. Diane Caplan chaired the brunch, which boasted bags from Valentino, Alexandra Knight, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Miu Miu. Elaine Turner continued the tradition of designing a custom handbag exclusively for the afternoon: a newly minted collectible in a coveted limited edition for the cause. LUXE LINING M ore than $230,000 was raised during the gathering at the Omni Houston Galleria Hotel. The Spirit of Allie and Taylor Award — named after Allie Leigh Scott and Taylor Anne Brewton, who succumbed to cancer but whose memory inspired the creation of HFC — was bestowed to longtime HFC supporter Christina Papandreou by founders Jenny Dowen (mom of Allie) and Larissa Linton (mom of Taylor). I t was a record-breaking year for CancerForward's New Summer Standard, the supper dance which raised $350,000. Once again the soirée delighted in its intimacy and ease — an evening that concluded the spring social season for some of the most active swells among us, for whom cancer survivorship is a priority. Chairmen Millette and Haag Sherman and Gina and Devinder Bhatia, along with honorary chairmen Donna and Robert Bruni, and Ellie and Michael Francisco, welcomed guests to the Houston Country Club for a night honoring 44-year cancer survivor Ellen Cohen. Cohen's early legislative support when she served as a Texas State Representative secured $3 billion, cumulatively, for cancer research, prevention and survivorship. Greeting one and all was ever-charming CancerForward founder Beth Sanders Moore, who oversees the cause, which seeks to prevent second and recurring cancer through its digital communication platforms. Post-cocktails, everyone moved into the club's central ballroom for dinner, followed by tributes to the night's honorees — not only from Sanders Moore but also from Rabbi David Lyon, who imparted the ethical necessity of taking action, which Cohen's activism so perfectly communicates. Afterwards, all hit the dance floor, moving to The Richard Brown Band Deconstructed. Standard-bearers: Kelli and Eddy Blanton, Margaret Williams and Jim Daniel, Kathryn and Ian Fay, Fran Fawcett Peterson, Lary Barton, Joella Mach, Michelle and Alan Smith, Liz and Tom Glanville, Ginni and Richard Mithoff, Kristy and Chris Bradshaw, and Kristin and Jason Kaminsky.
