Hayden Lasher is hyper-focused, just like her great-uncle, Henri Bendel II, who founded the iconic Belgian Shoes store in NYC in 1955. And she knows design and retail, inherited most likely from another great-great-grand-uncle, also named Henri Bendel, who founded the fabled NY store of the same name. Lasher designs one thing: a handbag to coordinate with the iconic Belgian loafer that mirrors the shoe's handcrafted workmanship, classic lines and, of course, the eponymous jaunty little bow that appears on the vamp of every pair of Belgian Shoes (tied by hand by the one Belgium woman qualified to do this). Twenty-eight-year-old Lasher grew up in Houston in Tanglewood, studied at Parsons in NYC and Paris, and has worked in the accessories, shoe and handbag arenas at Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors and Marc by Marc Jacobs. When she decided to go it alone, she approached Belgian Shoes about creating a handbag and launched Hayden Lasher for Belgian Shoes in May 2014. "The idea isn't to be an overnight sensation," she says. "I want to be recognized in the same tradition of Belgian Shoes, for creating something meaningful that will last."The already classic top- handle bag is handmade in New York and comes in five color ways — British racing green with marigold piping and bow is a fall best seller. $1,500, at the Belgian Shoes store in New York and haydenlasher. com. Holly Moore SURREAL SURPRISES + SLY ASIDES in this ISSUE DECEMBER 2014 | STYLE | FASHION | SOCIAL 4, 6, 8 POP. CULTURE. GOSSIP. I only wish I had started researching PaperCity's December gift guide months ago; these past weeks have been so much fun, with both legs and fingers exhausted from searching, shopping, hauling, photographing and returning the hundreds of items we snapped for the December issue — more than 200, to be exact. The stores in Houston and Dallas are chockablock with wonder. I am such a champion of real stores that you walk in to, with people who greet you, where you can touch and gaze three-dimensionally, and leave with a shopping bag! I love retail — in my next life, I long to be a barista at Starbucks, a librarian or the owner of a small store. On the flip side, I am very excited and pleased with our shiny new website, which should have launched by the time you read this … go to papercitymag.com to see. When top editors and our publisher were in New York two weeks ago for meetings with major advertisers (Chanel, Cartier, Tom Ford), the team wrapped up their talk about the print magazine and asked if anyone would like a first look at our new website. Some half-hearted nods and murmurs. But once Kate fired up her laptop, the faces turned to astonishment. This is proof enough for us that we are doing the website right. Finally. So, until all the lovely goods are returned to the stores, we will continue to play in our offices. I've taken a particular liking to the stunning new Hermès Sangles necklace fashioned with intricate gold chains into a fantasy version of a horse's bridle, with buckles and rings pavéd in diamonds. We at PaperCity are definitely in the spirit and have so many things to be thankful for this year. I, for one, have just returned from maternity leave and am now a mother of two. I was blessed with another little girl this fall and am in love all over again. I jumped right back into work after the baby. Our team spent a week in New York City visiting advertisers — Hermès, Cartier, Chanel, Tom Ford, Versace, Akris, Kara Ross and Diane von Furstenberg — which proved to be a hugely successful trip. New to our pages the last few months are Mulberry, John Varvatos and Tourbillon. We always come back from these adventures in high spirits after being told what we know is true: PaperCity is a beautiful print publication that's proven to work for advertisers. This visit was especially successful as our clients got a sneak peek at the new website. Yes, the new website. It is finally here and is everything we hoped it would be — stylish, smart and equally engaging. It's now live, and if you have not seen it, check it out at papercitymag.com. And, while your social calendar is reaching maximum capacity this holiday season, do squeeze in some time for shopping. Stumped on where to go? Just flip through this issue and peruse page after page of gorgeous jewelry. You'll definitely find some inspiration — and who has ever complained about receiving diamonds? With 2014 coming to a close, we want to thank each and every reader and advertiser. We're looking forward to exciting things in 2015 as we bring you more of what we do best. Cheers! David Webb, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Seaman Schepps and Bulgari line the cases of this extraordinary Houston store, with magnificent vintage and antique examples of the century's finest gemstones and workmanship. Tenenbaum & Co., founded by Louis Tenenbaum in 1975, was sold to Tony Bradfield and Kevin Black four years ago. The duo may be known for vintage jewels, but new to the store is Tenenbaum Colore, a 50-piece collection of custom, exclusive-to-Tenenbaum jewelry classics. The company's first foray into custom jewelry, Bradfield and Black chose a U.S. jewelry maker, established in 1900, that also handcrafts jewels for Tiffany and Verdura. Fashioned in the U.S. of 18K white, yellow and rose gold and colored gemstones, the collection starts at $800. Tenenbaum & Co., 1801 Post Oak Blvd., 713.629.7444. Holly Moore CLASSIC ROCKS PUT A BOW ON IT Hayden Lasher O ne of America's most discerning antiquarians — well-known across the country thanks to his distinguished appearances on the Antiques Roadshow — David Lackey is steeped in the delicious perfume of the past. Now the authority on all things beautiful and arcane steps into the contemporary art ring, following his well-received presentation at the Menil Bookstore in 2010, organized by Paul Forsythe. Lackey's new terrain is Devin Borden Gallery, sited in the historic 1920s-era Isabella Court complex, where Lackey's latest, "Memories & Maladies," is unveiled Saturday, December 6. Marking a gallery debut with Borden, the show charmingly — and oddly — combines 19th-century photographic images, lovingly assembled, with found objets. A little Cornell, part Proust yet utterly original, they manifest Lackey's unmistakable wit. Their diminutive nature belies each tiny work's poetic impact. Priced from $500 to $2,400, these desk-sized treasures rebuke the bellicose importance of the art market, offering quiet testimony to sensitive gazing. Meet Mr. Lackey at his opening Saturday, December 6, 5 to 7 pm; the exhibition runs through January 31. devinborden.com. Catherine D.
