AUGUST | PAGE 35 | 2015 LAWNDALE DESIGN FAIR'S INTELLIGENTSIA MATTHEW RAMIREZ HITS THE TRADE FLOOR. PHOTOGRAPHY KATY ANDERSON, EMILE BROWNE. L awndale Art Center's annual Design Fair is a calendar fave among cutting-edge collectors. A unique diorama of local exhibitors, artists and buyers, the Fair featured more contemporary and mid-century exhibitors than ever this year. The largest Texas Co-Op to date spanned two floors with blown glass, leather goods, womenswear and furniture produced in the Lone Star State. More than 350 early birds flocked to the preview party chaired by Beth and Jeffrey Abel, where DJ Fredster spun tunes and Deep Eddy cocktails, Saint Arnold's brews and tamales from Culinaire fueled the crowd. Co-curated by Lynn Goode and Sara Beck, the Fair saw buyers adding to collections. The Abels purchased a handcrafted ceramic light sculpture from first-time exhibitor Alonso Bedolla. Greg Shannon took home a '70s Milo Baugham for Thayer Coggin sofa and cocktail table from Lynn Goode Vintage, and another first-timer, Ann Trione, sold out of her Maude Lenior handmade jewelry at the Texas Co-Op, with Jill Whitten and Ardis Bartle scooping up her striking pieces. Top dealer Don Browne briskly moved his own collection of modernist furniture alongside wife Chelby King, soon joining the nascent Bryan Museum in Galveston. Fair traders: Lawndale's interim executive director Denise Furlough; board chair Nicole Laurent Romano; Christine West, former executive director now on a new artful venture; Eleanor Williams, Tiffany and Dennis Hatchett, Cali Alvarado and Peter Pettigrew, Julia Cushman, Cecilia Márquez, Leslie and Julius Gordon, and Jeff Shell. PHOTOGRAPHY JENNY ANTILL CLIFTON. P reeminent Cuban design expert/ historian Michael Connors landed in Houston from the Caribbean, complete with a tan and double-breasted navy blazer, to celebrate his latest book and address the adoring crowd at Pam Parker's interior design paradise Krispen. As the author put it, he loves Cuban rum, cigars and music, but Cuban architecture is what's truly outstanding — an impressive 450 years of architectural history are represented. His new book, Havana Modern: 20th Century Architecture and Interiors, published by Rizzoli, focuses on the more recent period, showcasing both private homes and public buildings. The book's publication is timely, given the recently loosened travel restrictions between the U.S. and Cuba. As guests sipped sparkling wine from Bon Affair, Connors mentioned that he offers private tours of Cuba. We spotted quite a few admirers signing up. Dreaming of the Tropicana: enthusiasts Janus Lazaris, Don Mafrige Jr., Christine Jaques, Payton Bauer, Jonathon Glus, Alton LaDay, and Bon Affair's Eric Dorton.
