T he 36th annual Orange Show Gala, Once Upon a Time, was indeed a magical mystery hour, chaired by a quartet of artists who reside in the neighborhood known as Itchy Acres: Magda Boltz-Wilson and Ed Wilson and Carter Ernst and Paul Kittelson. The nonprofit, which champions and preserves outsider art including the Beer Can House, encouraged philanthropists to channel Mother Goose and Brothers Grimm for a rousing masquerade. Top lots in the silent auction included a James Surls sculpture and Sharon Kopriva painting; a percentage of the auction's proceeds benefitted Houston Arts Alliance's Harvey Arts Recovery Fund. T he annual Fresh Arts Gala, this year dubbed The Crystal Ball, was chaired by three social couples — Katie and A.J. Brass, Stephanie and Ernie Cockrell, and Raquel and Andrew Segal — and honored Fresh Arts founder and grand patroness Marita Fairbanks, who was resplendent in an original Kasi Kubiak creation. The ball's theme was open for interpretation: Glasstire's Rainey Knudson dressed as a Magic 8-Ball, while many sported bedazzled masks and tiaras.
