T he big news first: A record $9.3 million was raised at TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art, toppling even the biggest year to date by at least a million. So, needless to say, the event Cindy and Howard Rachofsky dreamed up 20 years ago has come quite a long way. Back when I was on staff at the Dallas Museum of Art (one of two beneficiaries of the gala, the other being amfAR), I remember it being all-hands-on-deck for the few days leading up to the annual Saturday-evening Gala. Now, it seems the fund-raiser begins weeks, if not months, in advance with myriad parties and programs. This year was no exception, as TWO x TWO's 20th anniversary called for more fanfare — and, of course, more fund-raising — than ever. There was an event in September at Forty Five Ten (the retailer's proprietor, Tim Headington of Headington Companies, was this year's Gala chair), which kicked off a pretty pop-up shop of one-of-a-kind gifts all to benefit TWO x TWO. In early October, the Rachofskys hosted a dinner in honor of Sotheby's new Dallas leading lady Charlie Adamski Caulkins. (Sotheby's has long been TWO x TWO's auction house of choice.) A few weeks later, Headington, along with the Rachofskys, hosted a luncheon for Oliver Peoples with W magazine. Yet another event came by way of Chanel — a beautiful cocktail party held 10 days before TWO x TWO at the Rachofsky House. The auction art that was to go up for sale via the live or silent auctions had been installed, and guests began taking notes on the works they would soon make room for in their private collections. Representing Chanel that night were the fashion house's Highland Park Village store director Pilar Bleakley and Matthew Thompson, Chanel's lead of client development, in town from New York. My personal highlight among the festivities was First Look, which is always held on the Thursday night prior to the black-tie gala on Saturday. First Look, presented by longtime TWO x TWO supporter Headington Companies, exceeded expectations yet again. The theme was "White Hot," and with a weather forecast that called for warmer temps, with no rain in sight, quite a few looked white hot in head-to-toe blanc. My faves: Deborah Scott, Wendy Payne, Dana Garner, and couples Jennifer and John Eagle and Sheryl and Eric Maas. The evening, designed by Todd Fiscus, included carnival-style games with prizes from Forty Five Ten and the Joule hotel. The family of Headington restaurants: Americano, CBD Provisions, Commissary, Mirador, Sassetta, Wheelhouse, and Joule Catering served the fare.
