SIMON GENTRY A s a teenager, the phrase I heard most often from my mother was Make an effort. This was generally a less-thansubtle rebuke associated with my lackadaisical approach to hair brushing and lipstick application, but was also applied to my inability to pick up towels from the bathroom oor and habit of avoiding polite chit-chat with her friends. While it was often met with an eye roll and grimace on my part, times have changed. Ive now decided to dust off Make an effort and let it become my mantra related to all things fall. When I returned to Dallas after two and a half years in Mozambique, I was eager to return to all of my favorite haunts restaurants, shops and other places I have long loved. But my role here at PaperCity requires me to venture from my comfort zone, which, frankly, is one of the best occupational hazards one could hope to have. Once you start paying close attention to everything happening in Dallas these days, you realize the options are staggering! Between new restaurant openings (get thee L ast month, I wrote about some high-tech magic that digital marketers conjure to seek customers on the Web. When national print (ad) buyers make their decisions about what publication to buy, they often acquire data from syndicated sources that informs the buyer as to which publication is best for certain categories of brands. Additionally, we know one of the rst things they do is call local store managers and even friends, and ask which is the most relevant publication in the market. This year, and especially this fall, PaperCity has a ood of new national advertisers, including Michael Kors, Bottega Veneta, Kate Spade, Lagos, Akris and Ferragamo. Some of these ran with us years ago and sat out during the recession, and some run with us exclusively. Its an honor to be ratied by such brands as the top luxury publication in town. Aside from being a publisher, apparently I can now add crime-ghter to my rsum. During my nal trip to California this summer to a rented house in Pacic Beach some neighbors informed me they thought they saw someone steal a bike from the garage. My 14-year-old son and I went on the hunt. The drug-induced thief must have lost his bearings, because ve minutes later we spotted him in the alley behind the house. Generally Im a to Boulevardier ASAP), exciting arts events, cool new boutiques and all the great fall fashion trends (Im craving Givenchy boots, a draped Lanvin dress in red and anything by Joseph Altuzarra), theres a lot of ground to cover. I realize it requires no small amount of fortitude to keep ones nger on the pulse. Fortunately for you, were making it easy to stay a step ahead. In the following pages, weve featured one beautiful example of Texas modernism, four exciting new restaurants, four guys who approach their respective crafts with a sense of creativity and humor, seven great fall looks, Dallas 10 best-dressed women and specics on nearly 90 upcoming social events. It all adds up to an incredibly exciting start to the fall season. So dont just read about it get out there and experience things for yourself. I promise it will be, ahem, worth the effort. The idiot slowed down to turn a corner, and I cut him off body-slamming him over a three-foot concrete wall. He landed upside down and in pain. He came up stumbling, and a lifeguard who happened to witness this came to my aid, and we both apprehended him until the police arrived. Back in Texas, the DA on the case called and told me that I may have to come out for the trial courtesy of the State of California. Seems the tattoed-from-headto-toe-skinhead was a monster who had just gotten out of an 18-year jail sentence for aggravated assault. I chuckled and said that this was all over a cheap, rusted bike.
