A rchitect Michael Hsu has been putting his rustic-modern vibe on Austin since the 1990s with such high-profi le, award- winning projects as Uchi, the Line hotel, and the block- long South Congress Hotel. Hsu opened satellite offi ces this past summer in his hometown of Houston, where he has more than 20 projects, includ ing M-K-T, a trail-oriented mixed- use project in The Heights that incorporates warehouses and four acres of green space. Now the prolifi c architect has focused his creative eye on Dallas, with multiple projects including The Terminal at Katy Trail, a residential and retail development by Capitol Peak Ventures in partnership with Laurie Sands Harrison of The Rosewood Corporation, slated to break ground in early 2020. With residences ranging from $2.5 to $7 million, it's one of Hsu's most refi ned projects to date. at Michael Hsu Offi ce of Architecture, researched historic train stations around the world as inspiration for the building's design. "We love the grandeur of historic train stations and were inspired by the use of tactile metals, brick and stone," Colombo says. The building is topped by a penthouse and has 18 other residential units — only four per fl oor, making each a corner unit with sweeping windows and private terraces. "Everything is amped up a notch," Hsu says of the project's open fl oor plans, art lighting, 11-foot ceilings, and large walk-in pantries that double as catering kitchens. Like all of Hsu's projects, The Terminal at Katy Trail is designed to engage the neighborhood, with ground-fl oor retail stores, health and wellness related tenants, and restaurants at different price points. "It's an incredible piece of real estate in an area that's blowing up rapidly," says Hsu, who lived in the area briefl y after architecture school at University of Texas at Austin.
