Boys & Girls Gone Wild: David Ashley at Bootlegger's Costume Dramas for the Art Set Stacie Gordon at Bootlegger's MATTHEW RAMIREZ DRESSES UP AND HITS THE TOWN. PHOTOGRAPHY KIM COFFMAN, MIKE HERRERA, ANTHONY RATHBUN, ED SCHIPUL, MICHELLE WATSON. T he beloved Orange Show Center for Visionary Art threw a rockabilly-inspired bash, "Rock 'n to Our Roots," for its raucous annual gala, held at Astrodome-era Heritage Center at Crowne Plaza Reliant; the night celebrated the 31st year for the famous folk-art landmark while raising nearly a half-million dollars for its mission (think Beer Can House, Art Car Parade, the now in-the-works Smither Park and natch, the Orange Show monument itself). Chairs Trish and Ty Whitcomb joined auction chairs Erica Levit and Lance Rosmarin and 500 art-lovin' revelers to slick back (or raise up) their hair and shake, rattle and roll to the music of headliners: rockabilly greats Marshall Lytle, Levi Drexler and Danny B. Harvey. After cocktails, bites and a three-courses seated repast, OS supporters in cat's-eyes and white T-shirts were privy to a goody-packed auction — including collectible offerings such as the Ed Wilson bronze birdhouse won by Mary and Bernard Arocha — which added to the chart-toppin' six-figure auction total. Kings and queens of rock: Orange Show founder and board chairman Marilyn Oshman, long-standing board member Don Mafrige Jr., Tootsies' Chris Goins with gallerist Josh Pazda, Tracy and Glen Larner, Lane and Bob Schultz (the board prez), sculptor-painter Christy Karll McWhorter and Hal McWhorter, Art Guy Jack Massing with wife Star, new park patroness Stephanie Smither with son John Kerr Smither, Will Robinson, United Airlines' Scott Moga, and Madeline Haenggi. The Ball 'n Chain Gala presented a dizzying array of costume JB Fairbanks drama including the ripe for photo ops and oops, "bridesmaid dress disaster," alongside celebrity Marita brides and grooms, odd couples, Fairbanks wedding singers and bridezillas. Chairmen Eleanor and Dan Gilbane, Jennie and Justin Segal, and Mark Sullivan packed Winter Street Studios with 500 outrageously attired guests, who gathered to celebrate the union of Spacetaker and Fresh Arts Coalition as the aptly coined Fresh Arts. The event raised more than $100,000 for the new nonprofit while honoring four gents who are committed to the performing and literary arts: Inprint's Rich Levy, Matthew Dirst of Ars Lyrica, staunch Stages supporter and board chairman George Lancaster, and Sixto Wagan of DiverseWorks. Also on the agenda were armadillo races, live music from Klockwork and Geoffrey Muller, and studios transformed into Vegas, Bollywood and Bachelor/ Bachelorette-style lounges. Getting fresh: Fresh Arts founder Marita Fairbanks and husband J. B., Winter Street owner Jon Deal, Nancy Wozny, Shadi Jam, Kelli and Eddy Blanton, Spacetaker founder David Brown, and Fresh Arts' lady at the top, Jenni Rebecca Stephenson. Chairs Katy Pease and Hannah Thibodeaux observed Da Camera's 25th anniversary season, and more than 400 turned out to honor HYPA founder Heather Pray, who received a congressional proclamation from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. The Houston Metropolitan Dance Company shimmied the Charleston, and Dem Damn Dames executed a burlesque number before Will and the Hot Vikings took the stage. Contributing to the revelry were era-inappropriate cocktails, beer from St. Arnold's Brewery, eats from Sambuca and sweets from Nothing Bundt Cakes. Late night, all adjourned to a nearby speakeasy — Nouveau Antique Art Bar — for the after-party. Roaring: Sylvia and Timothy Britton, Olivia Shumake, Max Hardage, James Glassman, and Bethany Parks.
