The first Garden Book for Houston was begun by William Hogg in 1929, just after he, Ima and Mike began planting the gardens of Bayou Bend. Ima said at the time, the land is "nothing but a dense thicket." Now, if she can create Bayou Bend Gardens from that dense thicket, then we want the book. And we're hoping against hope this edition divulges the secret of creating the Butterfly Garden at Bayou Bend. Since I first stumbled upon their avenue Montaigne storefront, I've been fascinated by the way they've elevated an already airy occupation — the creation of fine fragrance — into the stratosphere.
