This perennial guide has been updated by Lynn McLanahan Herbert, a former curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, with input from 100 area gardeners and gardening professionals. Since the last revision was back in 1989, Herbert has layered in organic gardening, native plants and conservation. We know Houston's not La Jolla — we have our plagues, blights and scourges, but this book will see you through. The first Garden Book for Houston was begun by William Hogg in 1929, just after he, Ima and Mike began planting the gardens of Bayou Bend. Ima said at the time, the land is "nothing but a dense thicket." Now, if she can create Bayou Bend Gardens from that dense thicket, then we want the book. And we're hoping against hope this edition divulges the secret of creating the Butterfly Garden at Bayou Bend. The River Oaks Garden Club ladies and gents have been supervising the gardens since 1961, so they have to know, right? $40, at Brazos Bookstore, River Oaks Bookstore. Megan Pruitt Winder I 've long loved Paris-based perfumer Caron, which traces its roots to 1904. Since I first stumbled upon their avenue Montaigne storefront, I've been fascinated by the way they've elevated an already airy occupation — the creation of fine fragrance — into the stratosphere. So imagine my delight when Sloan/Hall set up a charming Caron fragrance bar with Baccarat crystal urns dispensing the delicious Accord Code 119, a sultry and fruity concoction; Délire de Roses, a solifore that's an ode to the rose; and Tabac Blond, launched in 1919 as a celebration of women's liberation during the age of the flapper. Bottled and packaged creations available include 1922's Nuit de Noel, 1933's Fleur de Rocaille, and the men's scent L'Anarchiste created in 2000 and sold in a Serge Mansau-designed bottle. With additional scents influenced by everything from the escapist spirit of the lost generation to the film noir Sunset Boulevard, the luxe champagne baths of a Hollywood tycoon and Orson Welles' character in The Third Man we can't want to get our hands on these haute commodities. Sloan/Hall masterfully recreates the magic of Caron's Paris boutique with its artful salon fragrances, and a lovely vapour trail of old money. $85 to $250, at Sloan/Hall. Seth Vaughan Bumble and Bumble's Nathan Reedy, Michelle Guzman C utloose Salon recently teamed up with salon and product star Bumble and Bumble to create an education center atop the Montrose-area salon. This ambitious project, the second such space to be opened in the U.S., was spurred by the success of B&B's "University" in Orlando, Florida. Cutloose owner Michelle Guzman and her designers removed a series of small apartments above her salon to create a slick, modern Bumble and Bumble education space for budding stylists.
