10 GREEN WONDER T he official opening of the $35 million Clay Family Eastern Glades in Memorial Park brought little fanfare due to COVID-19. But the lack of celebration did nothing to diminish the glory of the transformation of 100 acres of previously inaccessible and ecologically distressed parkland into a stunningly verdant homage to history, ecology, and recreation. A former craggy forest has morphed into a charming, usable, sustainable corner of the 1,500-acre park under the direction of top landscape architect firm Nelson Byrd Woltz. When the coronavirus pandemic rolled into Texas, most performing arts organizations hit the pause button, vowing the show would eventually go on, and hunkered down for what they believed would be a short period for recharging and creating from home.
