letter editor Hunt Slonem A s the 52 nd year of the Round Top Antiques Fair winds down, we're thrilled to have acquired a triptych of publications in Round Top: Round Top Register, Round Top Texas Life & Style and Round Top Antiques Show Guide, from owner Katie Stavinoha, who will thankfully stay on as publisher. (For more on this, see page 18.) But we're not entirely new to town. PaperCity has produced a special Round Top section in the magazine twice a year for the past eight years, chronicling what's new, people, places, and antiques fair buzz. But there's a group of people that has, for the past 30 years, slowly changed the landscape of Round Top … growing awareness and recognition of the extraordinary antiques fair, and of this tiny town of dedicated people that manage to produce it, as well as house and feed thousands of people: Mark Massey who built The Compound, as well as Henkel Square, Rummel Square, and Minden Square; the Royer family who have Royers Café and Pie Haven; Cinda and Armando Palacios who own Lulu's, Popi Burger, and Mandito's restaurants, the B and B Round Top Houses, and opening soon Hotel Lulu; James Dick at Festival Hill (which turns 50 this year); Frank Hillbolt and family who opened Round Top Real Estate more than 30 years ago; and Jerry and Joan Herring and Mary and Evan Quiros who own the Grand Fayette Hotel, while Jerry also owns and curates Red & White Gallery, all down the road in Fayetteville. And there's a new breed that have left behind other cities and moved to Round Top, like Brooke and Paul Michie who are opening Round Top Brewing, and Katy Bader with The Frenchie Luxe Guesthouses and Bader Ranch antiques; Lee and Melissa Ellis with the Ellis Motel (it's not a hotel, but it's the best watering hole in town), and opening soon, an art gallery and cheese shop; and Susanne Maida who purchased the Round Top Inn and Prost on Block 29 wine bar just a few years ago. And this in a town of 91 people. Holly Moore Editor in Chief 16
