COSMOPOLITAN | $625,000 A breakout artist who is 105 is having her day in Houston: "Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales" has been unfurled by Buffalo Bayou Partnership, in partnership with New York's Public Art Fund and aligning with a major show at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The exhibition travels to town after its remarkable debut in summer 2019 at Manhattan's City Hall Park, presented by the Public Art Fund. Havana-born Herrera, a pioneering proponent of geometric minimalism, studied architecture in Cuba, then migrated between Paris and Manhattan before settling in New York in 1954, where she was member of the city's avant- garde. Rediscovered in her '80s, she became the talk of the art world for her 2016-2018 international traveling retrospective organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, which made Herrera a star at the age of 101. At Buffalo Bayou Park, four monumental sculptures line Fondren Foundation Meadow, fabricated from aluminum and acrylic in monochromatic shades of blue, red, green, and white; their bold forms typify the artist's stance and were originally conceived, in many cases, as early as the 1960s. Herrera is also celebrated with an exhibition at the MFAH that spans six decades of her art-making, "Carmen Herrera: Structuring Surfaces." More on this story at papercitymag.com.
