P o r t u g u e s e a r t i s t J o a n a Vasconcelos was born in 1971, the same year Hans Hopfer designed his iconic Mah Jong sofa. But the artist didn't learn about Hopfer's work until 2019, while on the hunt for a lamp at Roche Bobois' Lisbon showroom; a few months later, the French furniture maker and Vasconcelos were collaborating. Their resulting Bombom collection reinterprets six designs, including the Mah Jong sofa, as well as rugs and cushions. Vasconcelos puts her bold stamp on the sofa and rugs with tart colors outlined by black stripes, reminiscent of her wall sculptures, and exuberant cushions in her own fantastical designs. Vasconcelos has been exhibiting irreverent, large- scale installations since the mid- 1990s, including a solo show at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Venice Biennale, and the Palace of Versailles. Bombom hits stateside this fall, in time for Roche Bobois' 60th anniversary. Roche Bobois, 4810 San Felipe St., roche-bobois.com. Rebecca Sherman Form AnD Fantasy roche bobois' bombom collection 26
