Recently shortlisted for 2020 Photo London's Emerging Photographer of the Year (as one of the top 10) and featured in the Vogue Italia photo festival, Navarro was among the stars of the CAMH's definitive show of this new decade, 2020/2021's ode to DJ Screw, "Slowed and Throwed: Records of the City Through Mutated Lenses" (traveling to Artpace, San Antonio). The Argentine immigrant, who wields a degree from the University of Buenos Aires, was also a 2019 Artadia Houston Fellow and, this year, is a finalist for LensCulture's Art Photography Award. Navarro also collaborated with PaperCity's art director, Michelle Aviña, to forge an image for our May 2020 issue. This month, the artist continues her ongoing focus on identity with her most important exhibit yet. "Karen Navarro: The Constructed Self," now on view at Foto Relevance, subverts notions of contemporary portraiture, all the while elevating topics of diversity and female empowerment.
