A NEW JEWEL BOX ON POST OAK THE ZADOK FAMILY DEBUTS ITS NEW FIVE-STORY BUILDING, POST OAK PLACE, STUNNINGLY DESIGNED BY MICHAEL HSU OFFICE OF ARCHITECTURE. BY REBECCA SHERMAN T he sparkling new Post Oak Place, a five-story building d e s i g n e d b y Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, is an ode to one of Houston's legendary retail families and home to the new 28,000-square- foot Zadok Jewelers. "My wife, Helene, and I have always dreamed of leaving a legacy to our family and couldn't be more thrilled," says patriarch Dror Zadok, a sixth-generation jeweler who opened his first store on Post Oak Boulevard in 1976. The entire family — including sons Jonathan, Segev, and Gilad — collaborated closely on the building's design, which Jonathan calls "Fifth Avenue meets the Meat-Packing District," in reference to their glittering store located within the building's sleek envelope paneled with golden laser- cut metal with a faceted diamond pattern. In addition to the more than 60 fine jewelry and watch brands that Zadok has carried for 45 years, their new bi-level boutique introduces a host of prestigious names to the mix including Cartier, Roger Dubuis, and Omega. The family has also partnered with four fine watch and jewelry makers — IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger- LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, and A. Lange & Söhne — to create in-store boutiques. Upstairs is an intimate bridal boutique and several lounge areas dedicated to trunk shows for artists, craftspeople, and designers. The Nina Magon Lounge, created by Nina Magon Studio, carries her line of bespoke furniture, rugs, wallcoverings, and lighting. The Zadok store anchors the Post Oak Place building, located at 1801 Post Oak Boulevard; Uchiko, a modern Japanese restaurant by James Beard Award- winning chef Tyson Cole, is scheduled to open in the coming months. Architect Jay Colombo, partner at Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, says "We've already been working on a screen feature that's nothing like any of the other entry moments in any other Uchi or Uchiko restaurant, which are all quite memorable. I can't say too much about it yet, but if I can say one word it would be pixilation. It's a tease for now." Design Moment. "We were inspired by Denmark, where cars and people mix much more freely," Colombo says. "So the building recedes from the sidewalk and allows the driver to pull under a covered area with cobblestone pavers. The sound of tires going over cobblestone makes people slow down and indicates something different. There are no curbs, and we used white cobblestones instead of paint to indicate the parking spaces, which is much more European. It feels welcoming as soon as you drive in."
