O ne of the most intriguing stories spun around this spring's big reveal of the revamped L a C o l o m b e d'Or Hotel and The Residences at La Colombe d'Or involves neither the gleaming residential tower by Munoz + Albin nor the refurbished historic hotel, a handsome update of the original 1923 Fondren Mansion designed by Alfred C. Finn. The narrative we're talking about instead revolves around a vintage apartment complex — nine modest units dating from the World War II era, arrayed across a courtyard that gives a faint nod to New Orleans. These humble rental dwellings have been remade thanks to a commitment of Hines and the Zimmerman family to not only save, but revive this complex tucked behind the soaring 34-story tower that comprises The Residences at La Colombe d'Or.
