NOTES ON FASHION BY STEVEN HEMPEL UPS AND DOWNS DIOR'S LATEST MIND-BENDER S neakerheads, rejoice: Dior has released its latest men's sneaker, and it's the perfect multitasker — equally at home at that big dinner date or on the court afterwards for a quick game of hoops. With contemporary curves, the B30 is made of technical material and inspired by French modernism, making it aerodynamic for faster walking and reflective for safety. Available in five colors — one for each weekday (repeat your favorites on the weekend). $1,150, at the Dior boutique, dior.com. MAKING ITS MARK A shlyn's Fall/Winter 2021 collection, aptly dubbed Hibernation, takes its cues from our shared recent experiences. Pause, rest, reflect … and wake. Designer Ashlynn Park, a former patternmaker and designer who worked with Yohji Yamamoto and Raf Simons at Calvin Klein, embraces our present reality. Her Zero Waste capsule collection, ethically handmade in New York City, reduces fashion waste through thoughtful design and responsibly sourced materials. The collection reflects a full range of emotions, from quick and easy to provocative and whimsical, as Park reworks and plays with traditional silhouettes by adding unexpected folds, colors, and cutouts. At The Conservatory. D esigner, architect, and artist Harry Nuriev of Crosby Studios participated in Design Miami/Basel this fall with The Elevator — his fourth installation for Design Miami/ Curio, but his first work for the Swiss edition. For the September fair in Basel, he installed metallic, parametric furniture in a small space reminiscent of an elevator. Nuriev notes that many see the elevator as "a transitory space, people going in and out, nothing more. For me, it's a metaphor for traveling to different layers of space, reality, and consciousness." Nuriev has a knack for breaking big ideas down into a simple and relatable core and surprising you with a less-is-more approach. Sculptural, futuristic, and always a touch playful, his work will be represented at Design Miami this December with a brand-new installation. LV CELEBRATES CELEBS L ouis Vuitton continues to dress the stars at some of the year's most important social engagements. For fashion's biggest party of the year, the Met Gala — which made its grand return to the limelight in September — Vuitton dressed rising star Emma Chamberlain in a gown of silk organza braided with sequins and rhinestones. At the Emmy Awards, they dressed actress and singer Cynthia Erivo in a dramatic custom belted leather gown with an embroidered feather train consisting of more than 1,800 feathers and requiring 315 hours to create.
