ART + DECORATION D raenert has been creating furniture for more than 50 years at its factory on Lake Constance, a glacier-made lake in the foothills of the German Alps. Master stonemasons, carpenters, varnishers, and locksmiths work from this spectacular location, making precision stone or wood tables with c o m p l e x e x t e n s i o n mechanisms for hotels and other commercial uses around the world. This is what the company is best known for. But just as head-turning is Draenert's Art Edition, a series of limited-edition museum pieces made in collaboration with creative elites such as London-based architect and artist Ron Arad, German architect and designer Hadi Teherani, and Swiss MUSEUM WORTHY FRANK TALK J e a n - M i c h e l F r a n k 's reductivist furniture might have shocked people during the roaring '20s and '30s in Paris, when ornamentation and excess were prized. Though sleek, his furniture featured elegant lines, classic French craftsmanship, and unusual materials (straw marquetry, shagreen, parchment, mica). Frank's singular genius was appreciated by other artists of the era such as Salvador Dalí and Alberto Giacometti, who often collaborated with him; he also designed interiors for eminent tastemakers including Elsa Schiaparelli, Cole Porter, and Jean-Pierre Guerlain. Frank died in 1941, but he endures as one of the most influential designers of our time. Now, authorized reproductions of his furniture is available in the U.S. through Holly Hunt showrooms, in partnership with Ecart International, which produces licensed furniture by notable French designers such as Mariano Fortuny. Look for chairs, buffets, desks, sofas, consoles, armoires, and dining and coffee tables, all originally designed by Frank in the '20s and '30s and available w i t h m a d e - t o - order options.
