DESIGN MIAMI BY STEVEN HEMPEL AS AN ADJUNCT OF ART BASEL, THE BIANNUAL DESIGN BASEL AND DESIGN MIAMI BRINGS TOGETHER DESIGN CULTURE AND SELLING EXHIBITIONS OF 20TH- AND 21ST- CENTURY MUSEUM-QUALITY FURNITURE, LIGHTING, AND OBJETS, DRIVEN BY THE THOUGHT THAT DESIGN IS AS COLLECTION-WORTHY AS ART. HERE, OUR PICKS. E stablished in 2012, Louis Vu i t t o n 's O b j e t s N o m a d e s collection continues to evolve. We've followed over the years as new work and designers have been added to the fold. It's impressive work — and it needs to be, given Vuitton's capital. With all eyes on the luxury giant following the unfortunate passing of menswear creative director Virgil Abloh, Vuitton presented its latest collection at the Miami Louis Vuitton Women's boutique introducing five new Objets in an exhibit curated by Spanish-born architect/designer (and creative director for Italian furniture maker Cassina) Patricia Urquiola. New work from Brazil's Campana Brothers headlined the offerings. The duo, who have produced remarkable and iconic works such as the Teddy Bear and Favela chairs, have worked frequently with Vuitton over the years. The year 2021 finds their Merengue pouf ($15,700) added to the Objet catalog. Inspired by swirls of merengue, it's available in a number of tropical-inspired colorways. The work of another venerable design group, Marcel Wanders studio is impressive. The aptly named Petal Chair, inspired by LV's monogram flower, is graceful and inviting. Stem- like aluminum legs support a leather seat that resembles flowers in bloom ($16,400). Joining the hit parade is Chinese designer Frank Chou. Inspired by the terraced fields of China and desert rock formations found in the U.S., his outdoor Signature Sofa ($65,000) and Armchair ($42,000) feature elegant lines and a contemporary covering that showcases Vuitton's waterproof canvas and Paola Lenti's outdoor fabrics. Also added to the collection are new works from Raw Edges and Studio LV. The Raw Edges Cosmic Table ($59,000) features a carbon-fiber base coated with LV leather and beveled glass top. A fine example of technical materials meeting natural, while Studio LV Totem Lumineux ($32,500) adds an Old World feel to the offerings. The mouth-blown Murano glass sculptural light is simple, beautiful, and exemplifies the marriage of pure form and centuries-old techniques. While it's less technical than its counterparts, we love the use of color and soft, warm feel. As Vuitton's influence and the Objets collection continue to grow, we appreciate their efforts in support of the design community and the spotlight they shine so brightly on the objects and their makers. The year 2021 was quite a year for all, and while there are always hits and misses, design and the objects that move us always keep us coming back for more. shop.designmiami.com.
