BY STEVEN HEMPEL FIVE FASHION HOUSES TAKE ON MILAN'S SALONE DEL MOBILE 2022 L ike many of its peers, Prada has been evolving into a greener, more progressive fashion house focused on alternative solutions to pressing environmental issues. From its extensive use of Econyl in its offerings to the sincerity of its messaging and continuity from season to season, the house is proven to be a leader in the industry. Such is the backdrop for Prada Frames, a multidisciplinary symposium running parallel to Milan's Salone del Mobile. Prada Frames delves into the complex relationships between the natural environment and the design world. Curated by Formafantasma, a research and design studio AGENTS OF CHANGE based in Milan and Rotterdam, the symposium brings together scholars and professionals including scientists, architects, designers, artists, activists, anthropologists, and law experts for discussions, debates, and presentations surrounding the role of design and science as agents of change in an evolving world where environmental challenges become more and more apparent. With a focus on rebirth, the fashion house has taken old and discarded baskets and bags and injected them with new life, using an ancient technique known as Coroza. Artists Idoia Cuesta, Belén Martínez, Santiago Besteiro, and Juan Manuel Marcilla use the Galician technique to weave straw, reeds, briar, and other natural fibers onto the objects, imparting a visually distinctive, sculptural look signified by tiers of fringes on each vessel. The exhibition also highlights the work of Loewe Foundation Craft Prize finalist Youngsoon Lee, who created a series of household objects using finely woven strings of paper in the traditional Korean Jiseung technique.
