ART & DECORATION Blackman Cruz SCHUMACHER'S DOUBLE REVEAL H aitian-American fashion designer Victor Glemaud, known for his slashed sweaters and body-hugging knitwear, worked with Patrick Robinson, Paco Rabanne, and Tommy Hilfiger before launching his brand. Now Glemaud has collaborated with Schumacher on a portfolio of fabrics, wallcoverings, and trims inspired by his Caribbean heritage. Toussaint Toile — one of 14 designs in the collection — references his roots with historical scenes celebrating Haiti's liberator, Toussaint Louverture, and the country's native flowers, foliage, and landscapes. Other designs mine the stripes and geometries seen in Glemaud's fashions, such as the 1970s Virginia Panel fabric and wallpaper, designed to be configured multiple ways. Rebecca Sherman VICTOR GLEMAUD LIBERATED OPPOSITES ATTRACT D esign partners Miles Redd and David Kaihoi play off each other's strengths with two new collections f o r S c h u m a c h e r . Between them, Redd and Kaihoi have created more than 40 designs ranging from fabrics and wallcoverings to trims and tapes. Although their design styles differ — Redd goes for bold and fantastical, Kaihoi for artistic and restrained — the two collections are designed to blend seamlessly. For his, Redd cites inspirations from Moroccan rugs and antique objects to the classic American style of Albert Hadley and Billy Baldwin. A standout is a wallcovering with an oversized Coromandel design with pagodas floating among gardens and clouds, an homage to a beloved antique Chinese screen he owns. Kaihoi is an artist who draws inspiration from painting, sculpting, constructing, decorating, and designing. Patterns for his collection range from soft and painterly to boldly graphic and reference Japan, Africa, and the American Southwest. His heavyweight Tutsi velvet fabric features African motifs, while his Hand-Combed Plaster wallcovering resembles a thick plaster combed onto the wall.
