I f a fresh coat of paint is the easiest way to transform a room, then why is the process often so daunting? That was the question Natalie and Caleb Ebel asked after years of painting their own apartments in New York. The couple's online paint company, Backdrop, which they launched four years ago, remedies much of the hassle with genius 12" x 12" peel-and-stick swatches for choosing a hue, and a tightly curated selection of 65 colors. The Ebels revolutionized the way paint has been packaged and sold for more than a century, bypassing the hardware store and shipping directly to the consumer. Redesigned paint cans — modeled after charming tins D apper designer Mark D. Sikes — whose love of big white houses, blue and white, and all things beautiful is legendary — has designed a collaboration with AnthroLiving, the home division of Anthropologie, called The Poppy Collection, and named after his French bulldog. AnthroLiving, much loved for its bohemian air and collaborations with such esoteric home brands as House of Hackney English wallpapers, went deep with Sikes' collection, issuing furniture, lighting, wallpaper, tabletop, and linens, priced $14 to $1,498. Sikes was recently tasked with redesigning First Lady Jill Biden's East Wing Office. Will he take Poppy to the White House? The Poppy Collection for AnthroLiving, at Anthropologie stores, MARVELOUS MARK x ANTHROPOLOGIE ART & DECORATION of Italian olive oil — make opening and storing paint a breeze, and the highly pigmented paints are low VOC and Green Wise certified. In 2021, Backdrop caught the eye of Schumacher, which purchased the company but kept the Ebels and their team at the helm. Now Backdrop is rolling out a limited retail presence at stockists across the country, where you can view the complete line, including their new wallpaper collection, and take home adhesive samples.
