N ewell Turner spent d e c a d e s c h r o n i c l i n g American design as an award-winning Hearst group editor for House Beautiful, Elle Decor, and Veranda. Now he's turned his studied editorial eye towards Mexican design with the release of his beautiful new tome — one of spring's most anticipated releases — Mexican: A Journey Through Design (Vendome, May 2023). In these pages, Turner, an American expat in Mexico with a second home in Mérida, transverses the regions, searching for the design details that make up the essence of Mexican design by cataloging nine decorative periods, from Spanish colonial and baroque to surrealism and contemporary. Turner acknowledges it is impossible to define Mexican design in one book, so he chooses to explore private interiors while providing cultural context, ranging from the Pre-Columbian Casa Parasol, in Careyes, Jalisco, overlooking the Pacific Ocean with interior design by Antoine Ratigan to the Baroque residence of architect Bruce Bananto in Mérida, Yucatán. The rich photography shows life in vibrant, Latin American color while Turner's thoughtful, poetic words delve into travel memoir territory. Turner has found not only the essence of Mexican interior design, architecture, and style but also a new meaning of home for himself.
