Staying By Mia De Los Reyes and Catherine D. Anspon. Photography Hung L. Truong and Scott Julian. Rothko Chapel Toasts Three Icons I nspirit: Rothko Chapel's Evening of Inspiration celebrated three living icons: actor/art collector/museum founder Cheech Marin, legendary civil-rights activist Dolores Huerta, and Art League Houston's 2023 Artist of the Year Vincent Valdez. Chapel board member Maire Baldwin, with husband David, served as chairman for this impactful night at The Astorian. A lively discussion between ABC Channel 13's Melanie Lawson and the honorees brought the crowd to its feet when the 93-year-old Huerta, known for co-founding (with fellow labor activist César E. Chávez) the United Farm Workers Association, led the chant: "Who has the power? We have the power! Sí, se puede!" Aside from the seated dinner by Jackson & Company, Inspirit fea- tured another course: The Benefit Art Auction, chaired by Robert McClain and McClain Gallery co-directors Sharon Graham and Hélène Schlumberger, joined by Melissa Richardson Banks of CauseConnect. More than $100,000 was raised via 27 donated works from national and Texas artists, including the three top lots by John Alexander, Delita Martin, and Dorothy Hood; all told, the benefit generated $414,000 to support Rothko Chapel's ongoing mission and to revitalize its Menil-neighborhood campus.
