M ecox has relocated to beautiful new digs on Bissonnet in Southampton — which only seems natural, since the home-design mainstay originated in Southampton, New York (with additional stores in Dallas, L.A., New York, and Napa). Founder Mac Hoak and husband/Mecox VP Fred Perkins were on the hunt for a new space after a fire in an adjacent building caused smoke damage to their Rice Village location. With manager John Tucker leading the search, they snapped up the former Shabby Slips location when that business relocated to West Alabama Street. The 2,800-square- foot space — which neighbors Jack Meier Gallery, Robert Alker Art Deco & Fine Arts, and Fritch & Co. — makes a lovely showcase for Mecox's house-label, vintage, and antique furniture; found objects; and accessories. The exterior trim has been painted Mecox green. While there's parking out front, you may want to enter through the back to enjoy the new garden scene with faux bois benches. On a recent visit, we admired a vintage ceramic camel garden stool, lusciously oversized green glass hurricanes, an antique French walnut settee reupholstered in Venetian blue velvet, and the Diana nightstands, which are customizable in any Benjamin Moore paint color. We also adored Tucker's adorable little chihuahua mix, Phoebe, who was serving as shop dog that day. Mecox, 2308 Bissonnet, mecox.com.
