C ooking is one of Italy's best art forms, and even the kitchens can be masterpieces of design. Florentine kitchen manufacturer Officine Gullo produces some of the most beautiful anywhere, and its new showroom in the F or years, the back warehouse attached to the Elegant Additions showroom in Dallas was stacked floor-to-ceiling with boxes of customer orders waiting to be processed. This was a good sign for Julie Koch, co-founder of the A Creative Addition Maestro di Cucina Dallas Design District — a former art gallery —showcases each piece like sculpture in a museum. Beautiful settings are nothing new for the brand; its showroom in Florence is inside a deconsecrated 17th-century Baroque church. Founder Carmelo Gullo runs the company with his three sons, perfecting their made- to-order kitchens and accessories inspired by 19th-century Florentine cooking traditions. The family works in partnership with local mechanical workshops and bronze artisans elite 38-year-old plumbing, hardware, and fixtures company, as it meant business was booming. But the volume of orders also signaled it was time to make a shift, she says. A logistics company was hired to take over shipping and receiving, freeing the warehouse to be used in a creative way. Koch turned it into The Shops, a VIP room for the showroom's top vendors to display their wares in the most original and beautiful way possible. The new space was unveiled in mid-October. "They really went all-out," Koch says. Three of the four invited to participate are from the United Kingdom: Samuel Heath, Armac Martin, and Turnstyle Designs; Accurate Lock & Hardware manufactures in Stamford, Connecticut. Antique French doors lead into the new space, which showcases a plaster tree displaying faucets and handles by 200-year- old British tap manufacturer Samuel Heath. Accurate Lock and Hardware, established in 1972, built a design lab geared for architects and designers to mix and match from its hardware, pulls, and knobs. "I think the architectural community is going to love to come in a play with it all," Koch says.
