Letter from the Editor Illustration @Acaeventdesigns I t finally is beginning to feel like fall in Dallas. Yes, according to the Farmer's Almanac it officially began on September 22, 2024 at 8:44 am EDT. But as we all know here in North Texas, we might not turn off our air conditioning and open our windows to let in a fleeting cool breeze until mid- to late October or even early November. As there are seasons in nature, there are also seasons in life. With the recent passing of my father, I have entered a new one — I'm an orphan. I'm comforted that as an only child, I've always had a crew of siblings that I've assembled, and they have all rallied to my side during this new chapter. It's helped reaffirm that Tallahassee is no longer my home, and that Dallas is. It's the place where I have comfort and support, and it's filled with those who can make me laugh when I need it most. The small shipment of things I'd packed up from my dad's apartment at his retirement community recently arrived. While I was judicious in sorting his things — saving mostly family photos and sentimental items — I found myself needing to have one piece with me at home in Dallas. Now, standing in solitary repose amongst the boxes in my garage is a mid-century china cabinet that belonged to my parents since before I was born. Its handsome, sturdy presence was a constant in my childhood. It moved with us to multiple homes, although I was always slightly intimidated of getting too close for fear of breaking it — or, more likely, the objects it held. It now seems to hold a lifetime of memories. No longer a repository for dishes and glassware, I see it as a talisman of my past, present, and future — and I'm anxious to give it a new life. Given that I am fortunate to know so many talented interior designers, I've asked a few for advice on what I can do to make this Fong family heirloom new again, and one quickly proclaimed, "I'll help you. Have it lacquered in your favorite color." (In my case, navy blue so it will match all my uniform blazers.) I was falling down a google hole, searching for inspiration and comfort for the holiday season, and happened upon this Thoreau quote: "Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of each." I plan on following that sage advice. I'm hopeful that each sip of wine will have undiscovered notes of ripe grapefruit or soothing chamomile. That as I slip on a well-worn cashmere sweater, it will have a renewed sense of comfort and ease. I hope to see you soon and that you will also be savoring all that this new season of nature and your life brings. Billy Fong Dallas Editor in Chief billy@papercitymag.com 30
