The walls are inlaid with glazed Japanese tiles for a subtle shimmer and quiet contrast to the richly veined stone. An elliptical bathtub, customized by the Italian design company Pibamarmi, was carved from a single slab of Iceland Dark. Rice and his clients looked at samples of marbles and stones together, weighing even more extreme options. "Some of our previous ideas were even louder," he says. "This feels like a middle ground, neither too safe nor over the top." Despite the deep tones and heavy materials, the room — like the rest of the house — feels tranquil and enveloping, an unexpected retreat from the outside world. With so much natural light pouring in, Rice reached for darker, moodier colors to ground the interior.
