Coming to Town Houston native Casey Larkin Blond launched Mr. Larkin as a ready-to-wear collection but put the project on hold while she built a family and established new roots in the EU. She relaunched Mr. Larkin as an online shop, selling a curious and curated assortment of brands sourced from L.A. to Europe. Now through December 21, she's having her first go at brick-and-mortar with a pop-up shop in West University, around the corner from Tiny's No. 5. Here, she stocks well-crafted and handmade women's clothing, accessories, home and children's items — designer names such as Rachel Comey, Nanushka, Dusen Dusen, Coral & Tusk and The Boyscouts, plus the label that started everything, Mr. Larkin. Tootsies, 2601 Westheimer in West Ave, 713.629.9990. Mario Buatta O Andrew Wyeth's In the Orchard, 1972, at Meredith Long & Company An American Master ne of the inimitable talents of the 20th century, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) was a painter who redefined American art with his way with watercolor; he was also an unerring image-maker, the conjurer of Christina's World and the stirring nudes of Helga. Now a rare exhibition at Meredith Long & Company brings to light a cache of works owned by the Wyeth family never before shown in one group. Spanning more than five decades, the watercolors and drawings date from 1940 into the artist's later years. Subjects reveal Wyeth's intimate connection to the land and his community, painted near his homes in Maine and Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania: landscapes including some haunting snow scenes, nudes highlighted by delicate renderings of Helga, figure studies and early marine views. Anspon Say Hello to African with a Side of Contemporary O ne of the most nuanced art spaces in town promulgates the Menil-established mission of exhibiting African sculpture not in an anthropological context, but by placing it side-by-side with work by Western creatives. We're enchanted by the newly minted Gallery Jatad, which revives a 1930sera neighborhood micro shopping center near the Museum District, reinventing it into a storefront gallery. Weeks after our photo shoot, however, it shuttered due to fire in a nearby retail space. Now the owners are back like a phoenix and have reopened — Houston artist Lisa Qualls, known for her exquisite realist drawings, and husband, Matt Scheiner, a collector/ curator with four decades of expertise whose day job is as an energy executive. Together they curate a powerful, ever-changing collection of sub-Saharan African artworks (dating from the 1700s to the 20th century, including works by Senufo, Bamana, Yoruba and Dogon tribes) exhibited alongside cutting-edge contemporary. Upcoming: Jimmy Pena's haunting drawings on found wood panels, imbued with quiet beauty (reception Saturday, December 7, 3 to 6 pm, through January 18). Catherine D. We're flipping out for the luxe flip-flops, made with the characteristic Havaianas rubber sole but accented in Valentino's camouflage prints with Rockstud spikes and colorful crocodile straps.
