AS AN ART HISTORY BUFF, YOU HAVE NOTED HOW CLANS AND TRIBES WERE IDENTIFIED BY JEWELRY. WHAT DOES YOUR JEWELRY TELL US ABOUT YOUR TRIBE? In my studio, we constantly try to capture the energy specific to the heritage of different movements and subcultures in NYC: referencing the ways in which jewelry, adornment and hardware distinguish a place that represents youth, rebellion and change. THREE THINGS THAT FASCINATE YOU. Bill Willis, Ettore Sottsass, Donald Judd. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO EXPLORE IN FUTURE COLLECTIONS? Rubber, concrete, diamonds. WHAT LADY DO YOU DREAM OF WEARING YOUR JEWELRY? Edie Sedgwick. CURRENTLY READING OR LISTENING TO…Listening to Lou Reed's Transformer. Reading Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up by Bob Colacello. WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE CONSIDER WHEN BUYING JEWELRY? Women today understand that jewelry helps define your look without taking it over. I love to see women choosing modern jewelry that speaks to them; layering pieces that make sense together; and wearing costume jewelry alongside fine jewelry. HOW IS DESIGNING FOR MEN DIFFERENT? I am constantly looking at male icons in my research: Mick Jagger, Robert Mapplethorpe, David Bowie, Keith Richards and Iggy Pop. The men's jewelry market is changing. A few brands had cornered the men's jewelry market, and those shapes and finishes are no longer looking modern. Men are looking for classic everyday pieces that are well designed: a simple pendant in a new shape, a modern signet ring or a classic ID bracelet with an interesting closure. My men's collection is a new interpretation of those steadfast ideas. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW COLLECTIONS AND INSPIRATION. My spring/summer collection is a study in the symbols we most associate with power. I was inspired by graphic military insignias, awards, decorations, medallions and hardware. The Fall/Winter 2014 collection commemorates the spirit of Morocco, offering a modern, graphic interpretation of the shapes, textures and patterns signature to a mythical country. I was most inspired by the prolific interior decorator Bill Willis and the colors and textures referenced in his work. Ettore Sottsass' Carlton, 1981 European fashion brand Suitsupply is teaming up with Stanley Korshak.
