DESIGN DAZE: THE HOUSTON DESIGN CENTER SPRING MARKET I 'm just back from a snowy long weekend in Hyde Park in upstate New York visiting dear friends Michael Dupree and Michael Fleischer, and I can't get the Dionne Warwick theme song for Valley of the Dolls out of my head. The magical lane leading to their home looks just like the one Barbara Parkins (Anne Welles) walked along in Lawrenceville in her Revillon princess-cut fur coat, stick in hand. Gotta get off, gonna get, have to get off from this ride. And, yes, we also watched the movie late one night. Back in Houston, we are putting the March issue to bed as I write, and the balmy weather expected this weekend has me perusing tillers to at last begin cultivating a 20-by-40-foot garden at my farm, now named Pond Hollow. Michael Dupree in Hyde Park is a master gardener with a degree from Cornell, and I know what beauty lurks beneath his snow banks. So any scraps of knowledge he strews, I jot down immediately. For online seed and plants, he recommends Van Engelen Farms and John Scheepers flower bulbs and kitchen garden seeds (operating since 1908). Rachel Ashwell, founder of Shabby Chic, is in from London, as well as designer Barbara Westbrook from Atlanta — both with new books in tow. All will join a lively panel discussion at 11 am at Alkusari Stone Showroom (Suite 229), followed by a book signing of the designers' new tomes. That night, PaperCity Design Awards are presented by Ashwell and Westbrook, at a 7 pm cocktail reception at Design House showroom (Suite 115). Take a peek into six intriguing residences, guided by insiders Star Massing of Boulevard Realty (she's known as the Realtor to the art, architecture and design communities, plus she's married to Art Guy Jack Massing) and Catherine D. Anspon, PaperCity's executive editor, visual arts + features. The duo have crafted ArtHouse.001, a two-day, private-bus tour to exceptional and fascinating Houston collections. To celebrate this iconic boot, the 190-year-old British shoemaker brand Clarks has launched an artist-initiative limited- edition Desert Boot collection, Clarks: ReBooted. Dallas' favorite international curator, Filippo Tattoni-Marcozzi (formerly of The Goss- Michael Foundation) worked with Clarks' creative team and 14 artists and designers to create the collection. "Shoes are the one thing that always fit me, so I could not say no to helping to design 14 versions of one of my favorite classics: Clarks' Desert Boot." The collection, along with one-of- a-kind works of art Filippo Tattoni-Marcozzi wearing Make Art Not War limited-edition Desert Boots by artists Bob and Roberta Smith. The new barware collection by Houston native Bailey McCarthy of Biscuit Home and irreverent New Orleans-based artist Ashley Longshore is just that. "I started collecting Ashley's work in college and wanted to get more art and original works in the store," McCarthy says. "So the idea of a capsule collection really made sense for both of us." The collaboration was born of their long-time friendship and mutual "badass female admiration," adds Longshore, whose recent collabs with Anthropology and Blake Lively have catapulted her following into a different stratosphere. With this third collaboration, she has total creative license — in other words, anything goes. The limited-edition collection (which consists of Lucite trays, a glass champagne bucket, rocks glasses and a catch-all dish) will be introduced to the public at a cocktail party at Biscuit Home Thursday, March 26, 6 to 9 pm, alongside original full-scale pieces of Longshore's art. Two new books to inspire are featured in Design Notes on page 52. Bunny Williams on Garden Style is a reissue of her 1998 classic, enhanced and updated. This woman does no wrong in my book. And, Highgrove: an English Country Garden, written by the Prince of Wales and landscape architect Bunny Guinness, is an extraordinary look at one of the most celebrated organic gardens in the world — and certainly the most stunning. It's quite remarkable to return from minus-10- degree weather and towering snow banks to Houston, garden tillers and seed sites, all in one weekend.
