GALLERY GALLIVANTING TWO EVENINGS, SIX ART STOPS CATHERINE D. ANSPON CANVASES THE SCENE. PHOTOGRAPHY MIKE HERRERA, LEAH WALKER WILSON. W e're in the thick of the season, and from late fall to early spring is this scribe's favorite time for gallery perambulations. Two whirlwind evenings for a half-dozen shows of import as follows. Evening one: Octavia Art Gallery's solo for Carole Feuerman proved that Pop is never out of fashion, and that the legacy of realist sculptor Duane Hanson lives on. Feuerman's aquatic, realistic, life-size babes segued into the next stop — the blue-chip McClain Gallery. Bruce High Quality Foundation, a band of Whitney Biennial-exhibited pranksters who nonetheless make beautiful post-Warhol canvases, held court there, complete with a PA by Vito Schnabel, who represents the collective in NYC. Evening deux: This year started in earnest with a trio of Colquitt openings. The unerring Betty Moody Gallery presented a calm and still moment in the bronze bird nests of Lisa Ludwig — truly sublime. Neighbor Laura Rathe Fine Art also entertained a tremendous crowd on the occasion of supreme abstractionist Christopher Martin, who was celebrating his 20th anniversary with paintings distinguished by limpid colors and lush tonal patterns. Next door, Dan Allison showcased moody nocturnal collages by Bob Russell, which I admired before dashing to the Station Museum of Contemporary Art for "Degrees of Separation." Overseen by director/activist Jim Harithas, it presented Mel Chin plus five hometown talents — Mike Hollis, Mary Jenewein, Wayne Gilbert (finally getting his museum due), the collective Sin Huellas and street artist Empire — whose work is united by a sense of political urgency. T he Beacon drew more than 350 altruists to its annual Come to the Table bash, the signature event of the season for the nonprofit that offers meals and job-placement services to 600 homeless people daily. An all-star lineup of local chefs collaborated on the alfresco meal in the name of gastronomical philanthropy — top-flight toques Randy Evans (from the now-shuttered Haven, who will soon man the range at Table57), Hugo Ortega (Caracol, Hugo's), John Sheely (Mockingbird Bistro), Claire Smith (Canopy), Efisio Farris (Arcodoro), Kevin Naderi (Roost), Kevin Bryant (Eleven XI) and The Beacon's own chef and kitchen manager Mike Puccio. Event chair J.J. Stevak, auction chair Michele Leal, and chef chair Wick Rowland curated the culinary evening, which began with a cocktail reception in Nancy's Garden adjacent to Christ Church Cathedral downtown. Dinner and a live auction followed at The Beacon Day Center, where Charly Weldon presented the Beacon of Light Awards to Bel Inizio: The Race for a Better Life, a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged women through fitness and nutrition; the Chapel of St. Basil Youth Group from the University of St. Thomas (Lorraine Talbot accepted on their behalf); and longtime volunteer Sally Hill. At the table: Joella and Steve Mach, Pam and Bill Sengelmann, Daniel Santamaria, Robert Gallegos, Mandy Chapman Semple, Bess and Matt Wareing, Nancy Powell Moore, and Rob Rowland.
