PHOTOGRAPHY STEVE LEE PHOTOGRAPHY. SOME VERY GOOD BRICKS Like the Academy Awards for historic buildings and those who love them, the benefit recognized 18 preservation success stories. These ranged across broad categories from the AIA Houston Twenty- Five Year and Fifty Year winners, respectively, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Noguchi-designed Cullen Sculpture Garden and MacKie & Kamrath's early NASA HQ (now the Gragg Building) to Future Landmark designee, bestowed by Preservation Houston's Pier & Beam young professionals to BBVA Compass Stadium. Most tantalizing were the transformations wrought by individuals to their residences including Glen Rosenbaum's redux of his folks' 1964 Meyerland modernist classic by Stern and Bucek Architects, and Karine Semple and Carl Hollimon's salvation of a Sixth Ward cottage achieved by Kinneymorrow Architecture. (This project also won a PaperCity Design Award for historic preservation.) The grand highlight was Phoebe Tudor's acceptance of the President's Award for decades spent on the cause, including the magnificent restoration and renewal of the Julia Ideson Library. Among the preservation pack: board member/ Pier & Beam founder Claire Cormier Thielke, Frances Marzio, Carol Isaak Barden, Steven Hamilton and Tom LeCloux, Mayor Annise Parker, Minnette and Peter Boesel, Council Member David Robinson, Cece and Mack Fowler, Nicole Laurent Romano and Joey Romano with her mom Patricia Laurent, and Buffalo Bayou Partnership's Anne Olson, accepting the Community Pillar Award for BBP's epic urban renewal including saving Allen's Landing's 1910-era Sunset Coffee Building. THE PAST IS PRESENT At last, the preservation movement has caught on in our town. One of the best indications was Preservation Houston's annual fund-raising fête, the perfectly named Cornerstone Dinner. This spring's bash brought out nearly 400 true believers for an evening at River Oaks Country Club, which served up fine fare vis-à-vis its honoree headliners — intriguing projects and people who have taken the mantra of "this old house" to an entirely other level. Presiding over all were the nonprofit's executive director Stephanie Ann Jones, board prez Jane-Page Crump and chair quartet Nancy Ames and Danny Ward and Dorothy and Mickey Ables. An al fresco seated dinner from City Kitchen served on the magnificent lawn was followed by ice cream and dancing to Klockwork in the Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion. More than a half-million dollars was raised to benefit Hermann Park Conservancy.
