NIGHT CRAWLERS TUXEDOS. FLAMINGOS. ROYAL TITLES. FLEURS. THE FALL SEASON WAS ALIVE WITH SOCIAL SPLENDOR OF ALL STRIPES. BY JANE ROZELLE. PHOTOGRAPHY KRISTINA BOWMAN, LARA BIERNER, DANA DRIENSKY, DANIEL DRIENSKY, JIM HERNDON. MAKE IT BIG A crowd of nearly 500 philanthropic types packed the neon- lit Omni Dallas Hotel for the Big Black Tie Ball benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters. Patrons were greeted by a troupe of musically inclined "Bigs" and "Littles" from the BBBS organization, who together performed the smash hit "Seize the Day" from the Broadway musical Newsies. Post-performance, Pierce Bush — newly appointed CEO for the Texas chapter of BBBS — invited the crowd to dance the night away to the tune of Emerald City Band's Downtown Fever. On the scene: BBBS president Keith Rhodes, Sylvia and Joe Alcala, Harriet Miers, Katherine Musick, Sabrina and Joel Porter, Lori and Jim Wales, Courtney Rider, Mark Deuber, Doug Dunbar, and Candy Conway. SIR TED Bring to town New York Times best-selling author and internationally renowned expert on innovation and education Sir Ken Robinson, and Texas-sized interest follows. (After all, the English intellectual is responsible for giving the most-viewed talk in TED history, "Do Schools Kill Creativity?") Robinson was the featured speaker for the Changing the Odds Dinner — the kickoff event for the Changing the Odds conference, which brought more than 1,400 educators and health professionals from around the world — hosted by Salesmanship Club of Dallas and Momentous Institute. Before the TED master's keynote address, guests toured the Momentous Institute with executive director Michelle Kinder; co-chairs Stacey and Ken Malcolmson and Christie and Frank Scardino; and Salesmanship Club of Dallas president Bill McClung. Robinson took to the dais next, speaking on the future of the school system. "Creativity is as important in education as literacy," he said. "We should treat it with the same status." The lesson: Keep inventiveness and imagination alive in scholastic programs. We couldn't agree more. Dinner guests: Jan and Trevor Rees- Jones, Regen and Jeff Fearon, Patrick Kinder, Lydia and Dan Novakov, Brinkley Schneider, and Laura and Travis Briggs. CARNIVAL OF ANIMALS Hats and spats made for a zesty mix at the Roaring Twenties-themed Zoo to Do Gala, presented by the Eugene McDermott Foundation. The annual fête continuously surpasses expectations in both fun and fund-raising, this year raising more than $1 million for the Dallas Zoo. Costume-clad chairs Cindy and Chuck Gummer, along with sons Chris, Jay and Ryan Gummer, partook in a moveable feast from more than 20 of our city's culinary elite — among them, Abacus, Javier's Gourmet Mexicano, Dragonfly at Hotel ZaZa and Tillman's Roadhouse, while giraffes offered photo- ops, and cheetahs and pink flamingos were greeters. Zoo-t suits: Underwriting chair Michael Andereck, Jill and Bragg Smith, Kara and Randall Goss, Ruth Mutch, Hayley and Gary Cogill, Tanya Foster, Cynthia Smoot, and Abby and Michael Gregory. FLORAL FÊTE Well-heeled patrons fluttered to Fair Park to raise a glass in celebration of the 35th annual Flora Award benefitting Texas Discovery Gardens. Festivities were in full bloom as event chairs Claudia Williams, Holly Lawrence, and Allison McAfee and TDG executive director, Dick Davis, welcomed guests to the opulent evening where Denise and Ray Nixon were bestowed one of the city's most prestigious honors. Luminaries: Waverly and David Smith, Brittny Allred, Libba Davis, Jahn Lafitte, and Sarah Gardner.
