FEBRUARY | PAGE 10 | 2016 A HEAVENLY NIGHT CRYSTAL CHARITY BALL LANDS ON A STAR O h, the magic of a fairy godmother — someone to transport us from our everyday lives into an enchanting world where anything is possible. It seems the philanthropic fairies of The Crystal Charity Ball are capable of making fairy-tale fantasies reality, too, if only for one dazzling black-tie night. Ball chair Michal Powell — with more than a tad extra help from event-design wizard Tom Addis and The Garden Gate floral guru Junior Villanueva — brought her sublime vision of "An Evening of Celestial Radiance" to life, transforming the Hilton Anatole into a sparkling utopia with white roses, astrological maps and a heavenly rendition of Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night. Benevolent luminaries DeeDee and Jim Lee, Mary Clare Finney, Micki and Mike Rawlings, Rhonda and Fraser Marcus, Sara Martineau, Gina and Ken Betts, Pat McEvoy, Jennifer Sampson, and Tiffany and Paul Divis were spotted at the silent auction, which touted highly coveted items ranging from a Matthew Stafford– autographed Detroit Lions jersey to a Judith Leiber crystal-and-pearl minaudière and a vacay to Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. The well- heeled crowd mingled close to the bidding sheets until the very last line was filled and time to up the ante expired. As the dinner hour approached, the doors to the Chantilly Ballroom opened for the grand reveal — angelic aerialists performed dangling acrobatics from long ribbons suspended from the ceilings. As they flipped and twirled, the 1,700 guests found their seats within the sea of glistening tablescapes and cascading orchids and hydrangeas. Then the glass slippers came off, and it was time to hit the dance floor. Powell had one more star-studded surprise: a performance by the four original cast members from the Broadway musical Jersey Boys. With apologies to Cinderella, this ball lasted well past midnight but still boasted a most magical ending: The Crystal Charity Ball, in total, raised $6.3 million to benefit 11 children's charities. That is, no doubt, the best kind of happily ever after.
