M y late grandfather, John Geyer, was an artist. He attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, before starting his advertising career in New York City, art- directing and often hand-drawing the visuals used in major campaigns. During his spare time, and increasingly during retirement, he created his own art — most notably, photorealist paintings of everything from antique toys and Bloomingdale's bags to residential landscapes of classic cars parked outside Southern California bungalows. His work was represented by the late dealer Ivan Karp at his legendary, now shuttered, OK Harris gallery in SoHo. I have fond childhood memories spent there, with Papa (as I called him) teaching me how to look at art — not to just decide whether I liked it, but to examine brush strokes, observe nuances in color, study shapes and acknowledge the emotions a work evoked. Every time April rolls around, with its myriad art events — from the Irving Penn retrospective at the DMA (Thursday, April 14) to the Dallas Art Fair (Thursday, April 14 through Sunday, April 17) and the Frank Stella exhibition at The Modern in Fort Worth (Sunday, April 17) — I am reminded of Papa. He instilled in me a profound appreciation for those who create, whether they paint, sculpt or perform on stage. This issue celebrates that very notion: The incomparable journalist Lee Cullum talks with choreographer Jonah Bokaer and artist Daniel Arsham about the making of their multidisciplinary work Rules of the Game, which kicks off the DSO's Soluna festival next month. Arts editor Catherine D. Anspon spotlights 10 must-sees at the Dallas Art Fair, including first-time exhibitor Honor Fraser. Briana Buxbaum Dallas Associate Publisher briana@papercitymag.com PC House + Art Art: What to see at Dallas Art Fair 39 Art: Michael Craig-Martin chats up Enoc Perez 40 W hen fashion designer Jeremy Scott came to town for TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art in October, he caused quite the stir: On the arm of socialite and philanthropist Nancy Rogers (who was wearing a neon graffiti-covered gown he designed for her), he was all sex and rock 'n' roll in a tuxedo sans shirt, his muscular chest catching as much attention as the contemporary art on display. Our city's top fashion types fell head-over-heels for Scott's megawatt magnetism, so that same pack will no doubt flock to Forty Five Ten when he visits the store Thursday, April 7, 3 to 5 pm, for his Spring/Summer 2016 Moschino and Jeremy Scott trunk shows — the former riffed on the playful idea of a couture construction zone; the latter seemed a mod nod to Barbie in a vibrant pop-art way. He'll also sign his namesake book, Jeremy Scott (Rizzoli), which launched at Art Basel Miami Beach two years ago. Scott's PA isn't the only event on Forty Five Ten's packed spring calendar.
