letter publisher STEVEN VISNEAU, SISTERBROTHER MGMT 20 L ast month, I took my first trip to Mexico City. I was cap- tivated by the city's stunning architecture, world-class art institutions (you must visit the Museo Soumaya), and extraordinary culinary scene, all juxtaposed with the country's rich culture, from the street snacks to the work of local artists. One of my stops was the Museo Frida Kahlo. Also known as the Blue House because of its cobalt hue, this museum was formerly inhabited by Kahlo and her husband, Diego Rivera, and now serves as a public showcase of their works and belongings. It proved an intimate view into the couple's personal space and was a wonderful chance to see their art in an original environment. The timing of my visit was serendipitous, as the Dallas Museum of Art announced it would be presenting "México 1900 – 1950: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco, and the Avant-Garde," opening Sunday, March 12. This is the first exhibit organized by Dr. Agustín Arteaga, the DMA's new Eugene McDermott Director, who previously served as director of Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City. Inspired by my trip, I look for- ward to seeing works created by many of Mexico's greats, including Kahlo and Rivera, and to familiarize myself with lesser-known artists such as photographer Tina Modotti and Surrealist painter Rosa Rolanda. You'll want to plan a stop at the DMA for this one before it leaves town on July 16 — it's the U.S. exclusive for the exhibition and was last presented at the Grand Palais in Paris. Our visual arts editor, Catherine D. Anspon, has the full scoop on page 28. While we're crazy for spring fashion in this issue, we're equally excited for April, which brings a bevy of additional arts events (the Nasher Prize Gala, the Dallas Art Fair, and museum and gallery openings) — and, with it, PaperCity's annual Dallas Arts Month section. Prepare yourself now, as your datebook is about to runneth over. Briana Buxbaum Dallas Publisher briana@papercitymag.com
