30 FIRST PRIZE By Lisa Collins Shaddock Photography Daniel Driensky, Kevin Todora I t was an evening of discovery when the 2018 Nasher Prize Laureate was revealed in the maze-like gallery spaces at The Warehouse, an 18,000-square-foot private exhibition space in North Dallas that's home to the collections of mega collectors Cindy and Howard Rachofsky and the late Vernon Falconer. For three year s now, the Rachofskys have opened the space to the Nasher Sculpture Center's top brass for this intimate celebration. As guests gathered in the entryway, the center's director, Jeremy Strick, took to the podium to announce the next Nasher Prize Laureate: Theaster Gates, an artist whose boundary-pushing works range from sculpture, painting, music, and performance to architecture and urban planning. Few artists are better suited to the times, as affi rmed by the vibrant energy that made its way through the crowd. The artist/ activist will participate in a series of Nasher Prize Dialogues — global conversations held everywhere from Paris to Gates' home town, Chicago — about the future of contemporary sculpture. Guests departed with copies of Theaster Gates (Phaidon), a beautiful monograph to tide them over until Gates makes his Dallas debut April 7, 2018, at the much- anticipated PaperCity-sponsored Nasher Prize Gala. LAURELS TO: Nasher Prize 2018 co-chairs Christen and Derek Wilson; and guests Elaine Agather, Nancy Nasher, Kenny Goss, Joyce Goss, Brandon Kennedy, Gavin Delahunty, Darryl Ratcliff, Maya Crawford, Eric and Sheryl Maas, Alden Pinnell, and Meghan Looney.
