T he silver anniversary of the Silver Supper was the most elegant yet, from the lush, green foliage enveloping the atrium of the Dallas Museum of Art (designed by floral master Sara Fay Egan of Jackson Durham Events) to the soft music during cocktails from the Dallas String Quartet. Full-length portraits of the original owners of the esteemed silver collection, Esther and Karl Hoblitzelle (whose collection was donated to the DMA in 1987), hung in the Hamon foyer, alongside the evening's signature piece: 18th-century silversmith Paul de Lamerie's Covered Cup. The annual black-tie event celebrated more than a few milestones, including the 75th anniversary of the Hoblitzelle Foundation; the retirement of its devoted president and CEO, Paul Harris; and a record amount raised for the Dallas Museum of Art's Decorative Arts Acquisition Endowment Fund. The landmark year was in the hands of co-chairs Rusty Duvall, and Peggy Sewell, who greeted the evening's 225 guests alongside the DMA's Eugene McDermott director Agustín Arteaga, board chairman Melissa Fetter, and board president Catherine Rose. Besides establishing one of the most impressive silver holdings in America, the Hoblitzelles also left behind a legacy of legendary Dallas dinner parties in the 1930s and '40s. In that spirit, a custom fretwork screen concealing the atrium was opened with the dinner chime to reveal a glistening silver setting. Guests found their tables — which were set with tea roses, white delphiniums, and stunning examples from the museum's silver collection — as pianist Bob Goodwin played stage center. As the first course of Maine lobster salad with remesco vinaigrette was served, the party raised a glass in honor of the Hoblitzelles — and to another dinner party for the books.
