42 GLAM SLAMMING L ove him. Hate him. Can't quite forgive him. Whatever you think of controversial designer John Galliano, one thing is c e r t a i n : H e owns the concept of fashion as fantasy. Since joining Maison Margiela as creative director in 2014 — three years after he was fired from Christian Dior, the result of a racist, anti-Semitic rant in a Paris cafe — Galliano has designed his way through what many in the industry call his second chance, with creative aplomb. Galliano's Spring/Summer 2018 collection for Margiela is a testament to his fanciful talent, with models haphazardly dressed in garments that seem designed for the most bizarre breed of girl on the go. Galliano described it as "Dressing in haste!" The translation was both literal and glamorously figurative: Luggage tags dangled from models' hair and clothing; trench coats were deconstructed into show-stopping frocks; hair and makeup were disheveled perfection; and layers of fabrics and garments were mixed and matched, as if their wearer had thrown on random items of clothing before running out the door. But one accessory from the collection really had fashion critics talking: the Glam Slam, an oversized poof that looks like a pillow but is actually a handbag. Perhaps Galliano's fictional femme grabs this on her way to the airport, not only to stash overnight essentials but also to use as a headrest during a long-haul flight. Forty Five Ten on Main is getting Glam Slam fever, too, with a Maison Margiela Glam Slam pop-up shop March 15 through 31. What's in store? That coveted handbag, plus exclusive accessories from the Spring/ Summer 2018 collection, including eye masks and luggage tags, with two window displays facing Main Street inspired by Galliano's reinterpretation of travel style. It's not to be missed — unless you have jet-set plans yourself, as Maxfield in L.A. and Dover Street Market in New York are the only other retailers where Margiela will glam, slam, and pop up.
