30 UNITED WAY'S LEADING LADIES BY CHRISTINA GEYER T en years ago, Dallas entrepreneur and phi- lanthropist Lyda Hill joined the small but mighty team of women who launched United Way's Tocqueville Society. In the last decade, that group has grown to include nearly 400 of the city's top civic leaders, who raise funds and volunteer for United Way's education, financial stability, and health programs in North Texas. It's only fitting that on the eve of the Tocqueville Society's 10th anniversary, Hill — one of its earliest leaders — was lauded with United Way's most prestigious honor, the J. Erik Jonsson Award. The celebration ensued at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science — a glamorous gala of dinner and dancing among the city's most elite movers and shakers, including United Way of Metropolitan Dallas CEO Jennifer Sampson, co- chairs Kristy Faus and Carol March, plus Linda and Bill Custard, Alan and Anne Motsenbocker, Laura and Jason Downing, Carol and Don Glendenning, Gayle Sands, Cindy and Chuck Gummer, Mary Templeton, Kelly Compton, and Lynn McBee. Honoring Hill for her longtime service on behalf of the United Way was only the beginning. Just when we thought a standing ovation couldn't get more boisterous, a million-dollar announcement was made: The Tocqueville Society had raised a record-breaking $8 million for the cre- ation of the new Women of Tocqueville Fund for Women and Children. Cue the applause.
