24 SAPPHIRES & SPURS FRIED CHICKEN BY LISA COLLINS SHADDOCK. PHOTOGRAPHY GEORGE FIALA, SCOTT HAGAR, RHI LEE. O ne of my most prized possessions is a 1980s denim jacket I found at Vintage Martini. It's usually draped over a chair to best display the back, which has "DALLAS" bedaz- zled over a hand-painted city skyline with a crystal-covered Reunion Tower. I've always known there would be a night when it would be allowed to shine in all its glory — and it was this year's Cattle Baron's Ball. Like the epic American Cancer Society fund-raiser itself, the jacket is as Dallas as you can get. Co-chairs Jonika Nix and Katy Bock — the latter, dazzling in a white leather corset, fringed chaps, and diamond collar necklace (from Bachendorf's, natch) — ensured that the evening lived up to its legacy. The 45th annual benefit for ACS raised a record-breaking $4.8 million for the cause, thanks to more than 3,000 guests who came out to Gilley's to help give cancer the boot. Between the silent and live auctions, casino, mechanical bull, and Ferris wheel, there was no shortage of entertainment. The iconic Charlie Daniels Band fiddled away as guests worked their way through Southern fare such as chicken and waffles, home-style macaroni and cheese, and Texas shrimp and grits. The 2018 theme, Sapphires & Spurs, meant that vaults were cracked open and baubles donned. The Cattle Baron's crowd rocked out to a semi-private concert with Zac Brown Band, the musical troupe behind the beloved country anthem "Chicken Fried." The Grammy Award-winning country stars kept ev- eryone on their boots, and, by the time the late-night menu was closed and the after-party's Georgia Bridgwater Orchestra performed its last song, we were ready to do it all again.
