I n years past, Holocaust Museum Houston has honored remarkable individuals including Senator John McCain, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and filmmaker Steven Spielberg with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award. For the 24th annual awards dinner at the Hilton Americas-Houston, the museum saluted two organizations that have had extraordinary results in aiding refugees and immigrants. Houston's BakerRipley, which has provided resources, education and connectivity to emerging neighborhoods for more than a century, shared the spotlight with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, founded in 1881 to assist Jews fleeing the pogroms of Russia and Eastern Europe. The evening — chaired by Mayor Pro Tem Ellen Cohen, Lily and Charles Foster, Punkin and Walter Hecht and BJ and Buddy Herz — raised more than $1.1 million for museum programs.
