54 A DAZZLING AFTERNOON DEUTSCH SHELBY HODGE CRAVES DIAMONDS. PHOTOGRAPHY JACOB POWER. C ould it be that Lance Deutsch has reinvented the happy hour? Imagine late-afternoon cocktails and boozy Popsicles served alongside dazzling diamonds, watches and jewels. That was the scene when a bevy of young swans landed at Deutsch Houston for a gathering that was part salute to the season of weddings and part 90th anniversary celebration of the vaunted jewelry house. Deutsch's grandfather founded the firm in the 1920s in Nuevo Laredo and expanded across Texas in the '50s. Today, Deutsch Houston carries jewels and watches from Cartier, Kwiat, Buccellati, Mikimoto, and Rolex (Deutsch owns the city's only Rolex boutique, located in the Galleria), among other dazzling names. While diamonds of every sort were on display, engagement rings and wedding bands garnered most of the attention on this festive afternoon. Champagne and the Princess Cut, a special sangría cocktail, flowed, while waitstaff from Eloise Nichols passed trays of appetizers. In a light-hearted touch, Popfancy Pops was on hand, serving Popsicles dipped in champagne.
