48 A $2 MILLION AFTERNOON BY BILLY FONG. PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JONES. U pon hearing one of my closest girlfriends (really more like a sister), Ann Hobson, tell me she was chairing the Planned Parenthood Luncheon, my immediate response was: What can I do to help? Almost a year later, I got to see her shine at her best. The annual event, held at the Hilton Anatole, brought together a packed ballroom of supporters, donors, patients, advocates, and elected officials to raise funds. All of the events that Hobson has chaired in the past have been beautiful — she has an exquisite eye and taste that is rarely equaled. And so, the decor was perfectly minimal, save for the beautiful flower arrangements in shades of pink. The day's keynote was given by Leana Wen, the new president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, who took over the position long held by Cecile Richards (daughter of the late, great former Texas Governor Ann Richards). Her remarks built to a crescendo that galvanized all in attendance. But more excitement awaited: At the end of the program, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas President and CEO Ken Lambrecht announced that an anonymous donor had just made a $1 million donation — pushing the $970,000 raised at that point to $1.97 million. A few days later, when the final donations were tallied, I was pleased to see the afternoon had surpassed the $2 million mark.
