10 HUNT SLONEM D espite the elephant in the room, thankfully good things happen every day. Shelby Hodge is closely following Houston's restaurants and writing online daily about the many that are pivoting to curbside pick-up and in-store markets, as well as how the owners are devising ways to support their furloughed waiters and kitchen staff. See her story about how our restaurants are coping on page 78, and go to papercitymag.com for the continuously updated list of restaurants offering curbside pick-up and other initiatives. Arts editor Catherine D. Anspon and creative director Michelle Aviña invited artists to choose an example from their work that exemplifies our times, with an explanation of why. Marilyn Minter, The Haas Brothers, John Alexander, Kenny Scharf, and more respond with intriguing images and thoughtful insights into our world with COVID-19. See the works beginning on page 66. And, of course, we couldn't photograph fashion this month due to the close confines of a studio. Instead, Michelle Aviña chose artists whose work she admires; paired each with a standout runway look from Gucci, Chanel, Fendi, Tom Ford, Dior, Valentino, and Louis Vuitton; and supplied photographs of model Sara Grace Wallerstedt to serve as muse. Each artist — Karen Navarro, Jasmine Zelaya, Sarah Fisher, Letitia Huckaby, Robert Hodge, and George Sellers — interpreted a runway look from his or her viewpoint of where we stand today. The works are riveting and poignant. The portfolio begins on page 36. Our cover this month, a work by artist Jasmine Zelaya, interpreting Valentino, drives home our hate/dutiful relationship with the mask … it leaves us soundless and bare. Our digital team is posting uplifting and inspiring stories to papercitymag.com multiple times a day, as well as to PC Daily. The majority of our monthly issues are polybagged and mailed to homes.
