ART NOTES W h a t ' s I n a Song: Houston a r t i s t S t e v e n Evans unveils the most significant project of his three-decade career. Cue a site-specific commission for the New York City AIDS Memorial, sited in the heart of the West Village, adjacent to the former site of St. Vincent's Hospital, the epicenter of the AIDS crisis. Evan's "Songs for a Memorial" features 12 LED sculptures bearing text strands taken from dance songs of the late 1970s and 1980s. These artworks recall the love, loss, heartache, joy, and nightlife of the era that demanded activism while honoring the 100,000 New Yorkers who passed away. Through September 6. Photographic Forest Bathing: Catherine Couturier Gallery presents a Denver-based talent who revels in the al fresco. Wendi Schneider's quiet photographic landscapes and eloquent still lifes whisper with beauty. The artist invites us to contemplate hushed moments when time pauses in the budding of a rose petal or mist envelops a stand of trees. Her solo, "Into the Mist," references the Japanese concept of shinrin-yoku, aka forest bathing. These images glimmer subtly with the light of nature. Through August 31. Vaporous Doubleheader: At Nancy Littlejohn Fine Art, noted Texas artist McKay Otto — who was mentored by the late Agnes Martin — is paired with an American art icon investigating the nature of perception. For NLFA, Bell continues these concepts with Vapor paintings that shimmer with futuristic transparency, reflectivity, and color. Correspondingly, Otto's translucent canvases reduce the landscape to mere abstract lines that beckon the viewer to their luminous portals imperceptibly embedded with text. July 21 – September 3. Dramatic Dames. Shake up your viewing with the photographs of provocateur Tyler Shields at CASA Houston in collaboration with the artist's Dallas dealer, Samuel Lynne Galleries. The ever-controversial image-maker captivates, whether he's chainsawing a Birkin, blowing up a Rolls, or capturing sultry b u n n y - e a r e d models prowling the hallways of Chateau Marmont.
