last eight decades. "I said at one point, 'Let's do a rug that pulls out that rust color,'" she remembers, "The rust color naturally spilled into the other rooms of the house." The rug, a French Art Deco design from Morocco with a geometric pattern, did the trick. An angled desk that Wimmel designed in the manner of French architect and designer Charlotte Perriand is crafted from mahogany, a wood with deep red undertones. Wimmel gravitates to the faded beauty of old rugs, and she used them everywhere in the house, including a 1920s Persian Mashad rug in the family room, an antique Kurdish in the entry, and vintage Tuareg runners on the stairs and in the kitchen. Others were custom- made and -colored, such as a stunning dusky-pink rug woven in plush silk and wool, which ties into the pinkish colors found in the living room's brick fireplace. The homeowners have young children, so Wimmel chose furniture with rounded edges and soft surfaces — and when she couldn't find something, she designed it herself. In the living room, a custom daybed is sumptuously wrapped in shearling and doubles as a coffee table, and a pair of mid-century armchairs attributed to Fritz Hansen were recovered in cozy Holland & Sherry boiled wool. A sofa is slipcovered in vintage linen for easy washing and heaped with down pillows. "It's all very unfussy but still looks very elegant," she says. Upstairs in the main bedroom, a luscious patchwork shearling rug from Patagonia runs wall to wall and is a dream to walk on barefoot — just ask Rudy, the family's Australian shepherd, who has claimed it as a favorite lounging spot. This is a house that embraces comfort and relaxed living, but it's also furnished with refined vintage pieces by noteworthy designers, many of them French and Scandinavian, including Pierre Cardin, Guy Besnard, Bruno Mathsson, Gerard van den Berg, Willy Guhl, Friso Kramer, and Jean Prouvé.
