The quintessential girl on the go, B l o o m i n g d a l e divides her time between the West Coast and her Highland Park home. She grew up in a small rural Texas town about three hours from Dallas and lived in our heavenly hamlet in her 20s. She founded The SIL (which stands for "Stuff I Love") in 2017, and it's since become a go-to for heirloom pieces with a focus on slow fashion. Bloomingdale wanted to introduce lesser-known independent designers to a global audience; those designers in return offer certain pieces exclusively through The SIL. Billy Fong D allas-born and -reared artist Hugh Hayden has returned to Texas in "Homecoming" at Nasher Sculpture Center. Recalling another immersive exhibition edged in Surrealism crafted by Texas natives, Hayden's takeover of the museum's first-floor galleries and garden follows The Haas Brothers' critically acclaimed "Moonlight" on view this summer at the Nasher. The son of Dallas Independent School District teachers, Hayden was identified early on as a talented child, enrolling in gifted programs and attending the rigorous private all-boys prep school Jesuit Dallas. The multi-hyphenate sculptor's practice melds architecture training (BArch at Cornell) and a decade in that field, followed by an MFA from Columbia University, where he was discovered by Lisson Gallery the same year he graduated, class of 2018. Hayden, who's known for his visceral way with wood, crafts startling depictions of everyday objects for "Homecoming" (a dining-table set, school desks, football helmet, man's suit, church pews) transformed into works imbued with Surrealist overtones, often laced with menace. For the Nasher, Hayden's exhibition includes a reprisal of his 2022 installation created for Manhattan's Madison Square Park, Brier Patch, a thicket of 8-feet-tall cedar branches sprouting from wooden school desks — a commentary on the possibilities and inequality of American education. (Rather than just critiquing a problem, the artist has stepped up to endow a program at Columbia along with two of his galleries, Lisson and Clearing, for students of visual art and art history from the African- American and African diaspora communities.) Hayden writes in the Columbia Alumni Spotlight: "I grew up in Dallas, Texas, at the edge of the woods. I had a close relationship with the surrounding landscape that was nourished through a practice of gardening and later owning koi and creating a series of water gardens … Fast forward 15 years and living in NYC with limited access to nature, I now explore ideas of belonging to a social landscape through a lens of camouflage and natural materials."
