J ust in time for the holidays, a gilded group of creations is showcased at McClain Gallery in "Gold: Devotion and Desire." The 27 works span the ages and media, from the celestial 14th-century Master of the San Niccolò Altarpiece to an early 21st-century folding screen by Pattern-and-Decoration painter Robert Kushner. Adding to this show's sense of the sublime are works by internationally exhibited Houston artist Christian Eckart, most notably his square monochrome Detail Painting #536, from 1989, and Japanese artist Katsumi Hayakawa's meditative paintings evoking radiant particles of light. One of the contemporary stars of "Gold" is Salle Werner Vaughn, a Houston- based talent whose intimate paintings, diaphanous watercolors, and poetic bronzes channel the spirit of the early Italian Renaissance painters.
